AI: the new scientific audience we cannot ignore in medical communications

    At ISMPP (International Society for Medical Publication Professionals) 2026 in Washington, DC, one question came up again and again: 

     

    “What happens when AI is no longer just a tool, but an audience for scientific communications?” 


    We know that AI is increasingly acting as a gateway to information for clinicians,
    reshaping how scientific content is accessed, interpreted and prioritised.

    But does this change in how information is accessed really matter? Put simply, yes.  

    Reach now depends on how discoverable trustworthy, validated data are to AI platforms. For scientific narratives to reach HCP audiences, discoverability is no longer just about journal selection, open access or SEO. It’s about whether scientific content survives AI retrieval, summarisation and ranking.  

    Scientific narratives must be built to withstand interpretation by machines, not just human audiences.  

    This shift introduces a risk that cannot be ignored. As AI increasingly intermediates access to evidence, misinterpretation has the potential to scale.

    Even when AI reinforces existing knowledge, the lack of validation raises the bar for clarity and unambiguous scientific framing. Content quality increasingly becomes the safeguard between validated science and misinterpretation at scale. 

    What this means for publications teams 

    Across ISMPP workshops and discussions, a response consistent with our experience emerged. Navigating the AI era requires medical communications and publications teams to design forinterpretation resiliencefrom the outset. This means:  

    • Close alignment to aconsistent scientific narrativethat holds up when content is extracted and summarised by AI systems   
    • Explicit qualifiers and a clear hierarchy of evidence to reduce ambiguity  
    • Precise terminology that limits the risk of claims being repackaged without proper context  

    AIproofing must be a baseline editorial requirement, not a trend. 

    The human-AI balance 

    Another strong theme at ISMPP was where best to draw the line between AI efficiency and human oversight.  

    We know firsthand that AI brings speed and pattern recognition, but humans remain critical to define intent, apply judgement, provide nuance and hold accountability.Used well, AI can expand capacity, but human expertise remains essential to ensure responsibility, precision and trust.  

    Applying this thinking in practice

    Closing thought 

    Across conversations at ISMPP, the same conclusion surfaced repeatedly.
